Specialized tool for precise determination of engine positioning and crankshaft angle settings. Used to set and verify timing positions on Mercedes-Benz M176, M177 and M178 engines.
The tool enables accurate positioning at:
- 40° crankshaft position – used for timing adjustment
- 53° crankshaft position – used for timing verification
Function & Use
On these engines, locking with a crankshaft locking pin is only possible at the 40° position after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
This position is used when setting the timing.
For verification of timing, the 53° crankshaft position is required, which is normally referenced on the crankshaft pulley.
In many cases, the corresponding counter-marking on the oil pan is missing.
This tool replaces that reference by providing a precise positioning guide.
Depending on engine version and mounting holes, the appropriate tool is installed directly onto the engine.
Important Note
To check the basic camshaft position:
- The engine must be set to 53° after ignition TDC of cylinder 1
- The cylinder head cover must be installed
During timing verification:
- The exhaust camshaft of the right cylinder bank is not centered in the bore
- The segment is only partially visible — this is correct behavior
