Special tool set for setting and locking the oil pump and balance shaft during timing work and service of the oil pump chain module on BMW N20 and N26 engines.

• Different flywheel locking tools required depending on transmission type (manual / automatic)
• Central bolt of vibration damper (N20/N26) exceeds 500 Nm loosening torque → use 3/4" drive tools

Repair Information – Oil Pump Chain Module (N20B20A Engine)

The following information refers to the N20B20A engine. Always follow the manufacturer’s official service documentation.

---

Preparatory Work:

• Remove the cylinder head cover
  (Removal includes: right-hand tension strut, camshaft actuators, fuel rail, high-pressure fuel pump, vacuum pump)
  (When reinstalling the high-pressure fuel pump, the camshaft bottom dead center (BDC) position must be checked using a depth gauge caliper)
• Remove spark plugs
  (Risk of damage – use only a swivel/angled special socket, e.g. Art. No. 106510, equivalent to BMW 121220)
• Remove oil pan
  (Lower the front subframe)
• Remove auxiliary drive belt
  (On AWD vehicles with hydraulic power steering, ensure correct locking/unlocking of the belt pulley in installation position)
• Remove vibration damper
  (Breakaway torque: 500 Nm – Use flywheel locking tool: manual transmission Art. No. 115406 (equivalent to 118180), automatic transmission Art. No. 116859 (equivalent to 2222742))
• Set/check engine timing
  (Timing tools remain installed)

Removal:

• Lock the crankshaft using a locking pin
  (Equivalent to OEM 2219548)
• Remove the sealing cap of the balance shaft and lock it using the appropriate tool
  (Equivalent to OEM 2212825)
• Install the sprocket locking tool using the two bolts
  (Equivalent to OEM 2318117 – locking pins engage into the sprocket)
• Release the chain tensioner and secure it using the locking tool
  (Equivalent to OEM 114120)
• Loosen the central bolt of the sprocket
  (Factory mixed installation – use Art. No. 102497 or 102499 (T50 or T60, 140 mm long))
• Remove the sprocket locking tool
• Lock the flywheel using the appropriate special tool and loosen the crankshaft central bolt
  (Breakaway torque: 500 Nm)
• Remove the chain module
  (Pay attention to the friction discs – risk of engine damage)

Installation:

• Timing tools remain installed
• Position the module and sprocket, install the hub with friction disc
• Tighten both module bolts to 10 Nm
• Install the sprocket locking tool and tighten the central bolt:
  → First to 20 Nm, then to 95 Nm, then remove the tool
• Release the chain tensioner
• Tighten the crankshaft central bolt:
  → 100 Nm + 270°
  (Lightly oil the bolt and threads)
• Replace the shaft seal
• Reassemble the engine completely
