Required preliminary work:

  • Remove ignition coils, spark plugs, and valve cover
  • Remove VANOS adjusters (during removal, turn the shaft clockwise)
  • Remove the serpentine belt and both solenoid valves
  • Set engine timing and lock the crankshaft at TDC – as follows:
    • Both camshaft lobes point upwards
    • Check camshaft adjusters for locking: insert adapter (to be used like OEM 119270) at the rear and attempt to rotate the camshaft
    • If the adjuster is not locked, rotate the intake camshaft against the direction of rotation to the stop, then rotate the exhaust camshaft in the direction of rotation to the stop
    • The adjusters should now be locked in the initial position; if not, they must be replaced
    • Loosen both camshaft sprocket bolts and secure (lock) the camshafts
  • Remove the timing chain tensioner
  • Remove camshaft sprocket bolts and take off sprockets (exhaust first, then intake)
  • Remove the vibration damper
  • Support the engine using an engine support bar
  • Remove underbody protection and covers for the radiator and steering gear
  • Remove lower brace, loosen steering column, and lower the subframe
  • Remove the oil pan

Removal:

  • Remove crankshaft hub using a counter-hold tool
  • Remove upper chain guide
  • Remove guide rail mounting pins (located under the sealing plugs)
  • Remove the timing chain assembly upwards

Installation:

  • Observe installation direction of the crankshaft sprocket (teeth facing the timing cover)
  • Thread the sprocket into the timing chain assembly and install it from above
  • First install and tighten the lower guide pin (top view: left above the crankshaft), then install sealing cap
  • Install upper guide pin (next to oil filter housing) and fit sealing cap
  • Install crankshaft hub; tighten bolt only hand-tight initially
  • Align the balance shaft – note: three different versions may be installed
  • Tighten crankshaft central bolt (with TDC locking pin inserted) to 60 Nm
  • Install solenoid valves and the upper chain guide bolt with sealing cap and tighten (connect impulse sender plug)
  • Tighten upper chain guide
  • Install camshaft sprockets (do not mix them up!) and lightly secure with trigger wheels and bolts
  • Install chain tensioner dummy tool and apply light preload
  • Align and install the trigger wheel locking tool at the front of the cylinder head
  • Loosen camshaft bolts by 1/2 turn, then retighten hand-tight
  • Preload timing chain tensioner to 0.6 Nm (recommended tool: Art. No. 106650)
  • Tighten camshafts: 20 Nm + 2 × 90°
  • Install OE chain tensioner: 65 Nm
  • Rotate engine twice and recheck timing
  • It is recommended to replace the crankshaft oil seal at this stage (use tool Art. No. 112483)
  • Reassemble engine, reset adaptation values if necessary, and check fault memory
