Overview:
✔ Special design timing chain tensioner tool for engine timing service
✔ Suitable for BMW, Mini and PSA engines
✔ Used as 119340, 0197-M, EN-52346
✔ Allows precise torque application of 0.6 Nm
✔ Two-piece design for improved accessibility and accuracy
✔ Eliminates need for flexible extensions
✔ Suitable for professional workshop use
This specially designed timing chain tensioner tool is used for pre-tensioning the timing chain during engine service procedures such as timing adjustment and timing chain replacement.
It allows precise and controlled tensioning of the timing chain directly on the installed engine, improving accuracy and reducing setup complexity.
Improved Tool Design
This redesigned tool addresses common issues with limited access to the timing chain tensioner in many engines.
Traditional setups require flexible extensions to reach the tensioner, which can significantly distort the very low torque specification of 0.6 Nm.
To eliminate this issue, the tool is constructed in two independent components:
- Outer sleeve, installed first by hand or socket
- Central tensioning bolt, tightened with an Allen key and torque wrench
This ensures a straight and accurate torque application without extensions.
Advantages
- Accurate torque transmission (0.6 Nm) without distortion
- No need for flexible extension tools
- Improved accessibility in confined engine bays
- High precision during timing adjustment
- Optimized for modern engine layouts
Usage Notes
- The outer sleeve is screwed in first, slightly beyond flush position
- The pressure bolt is then inserted and tightened to 0.6 Nm
- No risk of components falling into the timing case during normal use
Timing Chain Wear Check (Optional)
According to repair procedures, the tool can also be used to check timing chain elongation:
- Up to 68 mm → adjust timing
- Up to 72 mm → use wear indicator (item no. 115160 or 117200)
- Over 72 mm → replace timing chain
Due to the compact tool design, measure from cylinder head surface to bolt position (+ bolt length 60 mm) as reference.
Recommendation
In practice, timing chain inspection via this method is rarely required.
It is recommended to use dedicated wear indicators:
- item no. 115160
- item no. 117200
