Timing Chain Wear Indicator Tool VAG 1.2 TSI as T30121

Special tool for determining timing chain elongation and wear on VAG 1.2L TSI engines. Enables professional diagnostics of chain condition without full disassembly.

Cold start rattling noises may indicate timing chain elongation. This tool allows quick and reliable verification of chain condition following manufacturer procedure (TPI 2033258).

Diagnostic Principle

The tool replaces the original chain tensioner and uses a control pin to indicate chain wear condition.

At top dead center (TDC):

• If the control pin is flush or protruding → timing chain is within tolerance
• If the control pin remains inside the housing → timing chain must be replaced

Important Notes

The engine must NOT be started with the test tensioner installed. Engine operation is only permitted with the original hydraulic chain tensioner.

Procedure

• Set engine to TDC and lock camshaft using special tool (e.g. T10414)
• Do NOT lock the crankshaft
• Remove installed chain tensioner including sealing ring (measurement without sealing ring)
• Install test tensioner and tighten to 20 Nm
• Remove camshaft locking tool
• Rotate engine manually two crankshaft revolutions
• Reinstall camshaft locking tool
• Check control pin position at TDC

Post-Diagnosis Recommendations

If timing chain is OK:

• Inspect oil filter seal for damage or disintegration
• Check for possible blockage in oil channels
• Verify no double installation of sealing rings after service
• If noise persists, inspect chain tensioner

Replace tensioner:
03F109507D → 03F109507F

Do NOT replace if already equipped with:
03F0109507B or 03F109507F

According to repair guidelines, this diagnostic method is officially specified for Seat and Skoda. However, it is technically applicable to identical engines used in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.

Procedure

• Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC).
• Lock the camshaft using special tool Art. No. 104925 (equivalent to T10414).
  Note: The crankshaft must NOT be locked during this procedure.
• Remove the installed timing chain tensioner, including the sealing ring.
  The measurement must be carried out without the sealing ring.
• Install the test timing chain tensioner and tighten to 20 Nm.
• Remove the camshaft locking tool.
• Rotate the engine two full crankshaft revolutions.
• Reinstall the camshaft locking tool.
• At TDC, with a correctly functioning timing chain:
  • The inspection pin of the tensioner must be flush with or protruding from the housing.
• If the inspection pin is recessed inside the tensioner housing, the timing chain must be replaced.

Actions if Diagnosis is Positive (Timing Chain OK)

• Inspect the oil filter seal for damage.
  • The seal may have degraded and obstructed oil passages within the housing.
  • A double-installed sealing ring after servicing may also cause issues.
• If timing chain noise is suspected and the chain is confirmed to be in good condition:
  • Inspect the timing chain tensioner.
• Replace part number 03F109507D with 03F109507F.
  • If a tensioner with part number 03F0109507B or 03F109507F is already installed, it should NOT be replaced.

This diagnostic method is officially specified in the repair guidelines only for SEAT and Škoda vehicles.

However, from a technical standpoint, it can also be applied to Volkswagen and Audi vehicles equipped with identical engine codes.
