This professional engine timing tool kit is designed for BMW petrol engines N40 and N45. It includes nearly all special tools required for engine overhaul, timing chain replacement, and precise valve timing adjustment.

The kit is suitable for professional workshops and advanced technicians performing complex engine service operations.

Functionality

The set includes tools for:

  • Camshaft timing and alignment
  • Balance shaft adjustment and locking
  • Crankshaft locking and counter-holding
  • Timing chain pre-tensioning
  • Accurate application of 0.6 Nm pre-load torque using the included torque wrench

All three versions of balance shaft locking tools are included, eliminating the need to identify the correct variant beforehand and preventing delays during engine repair.

When loosening the crankshaft central bolt, the oil pump / balance shaft sprocket can rotate freely on the crankshaft, requiring mandatory re-adjustment of the balance shafts.

Build Quality

All tools are manufactured from high-grade steel using CNC machining processes.
Unlike lower-quality cast tools, this ensures precise fitment, durability, and reliable professional results.

Compatibility

Engine Codes:
N40, N45

Procedure (Follow manufacturer specifications at all times)

  • Remove cylinder head cover
  • Remove oil pan (not required for E87 and E90)
  • Set engine and crankshaft to TDC using crankshaft locking pin (camshaft flats must be vertical, cam profile facing upwards)
  • Loosen crankshaft central bolt by 90° using counter holder (remove locking pin during loosening), then reinstall locking pin and remove bolt
  • Loosen camshaft adjuster bolts (hold camshaft via hex profile, note installation position)
  • Install camshaft locking tools
  • Remove chain tensioner
  • Loosen camshaft adjusters and remove units
  • Remove guide rail bolts (hidden behind sealing screws – remove camshaft solenoids first)
  • Remove timing chain assembly upward (ensure crankshaft sprocket orientation is correct – teeth facing crankshaft)
  • Install timing chain assembly (lower bolt first, then upper), reinstall sealing screws
  • Install crankshaft hub and lightly tighten central bolt
  • Adjust balance shafts manually using appropriate tool
  • Pre-tighten crankshaft central bolt to 60 Nm with locking pin installed
  • Install camshaft solenoids and chain guide bolts
  • Install camshaft sprockets (only lightly tighten bolts)
  • Install timing chain pre-tensioning tool
  • Rotate camshaft sensor wheels until locking tool fits without play and can be bolted to cylinder head
  • Loosen camshaft adjusters 1/2 turn and pre-tension chain to 0.6 Nm
  • Tighten camshaft sprockets
  • Remove locking tool and replace pre-tension tool with original chain tensioner
  • Final tighten crankshaft central bolt using counter holder (remove locking pin beforehand)
  • Replace crankshaft seal if necessary (only possible after hub installation)
  • Rotate engine and verify timing

Important Notes

Camshaft adjusters must be in installation position.

With crankshaft locked at TDC and chain tensioned, attempt to rotate camshafts (intake with rotation direction, exhaust against rotation).
If locking position does not engage, the camshaft adjuster must be replaced.

The TDC locking hole for the crankshaft is located on the intake side below the starter.
On automatic transmissions, a larger bore may be present and can be mistaken—verify correct position by rotating the crankshaft.

Use the crankshaft locking pin only for the 60 Nm pre-tightening step.
Do NOT use it as a counter holder for the final 300 Nm tightening—use the dedicated counter holder tool.
