Technical Notes

On Mercedes engines equipped with variable valve lift, the camshaft hex position differs. The tool remains compatible, but mounting holes are positioned differently.

Engine M200.711 does not require a timing tool.

Factory timing marks on the chain and sprockets may not ensure correct base timing due to wear or camshaft adjuster faults. The valve cover must be removed and camshaft positions checked before and after adjustment.

Timing Chain Replacement / Valve Timing Adjustment

Note

Although the timing chain and drive sprockets are equipped with alignment marks, wear or defects in the camshaft adjusters (VVT units) may result in incorrect base engine timing even if the marks are correctly aligned.

The valve cover must be removed, and the camshaft positions must be checked before and after adjustment to ensure correct timing.

Procedure

These instructions refer to the M282.914 engine installed in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class W177 (model year 2018), but can be applied to other manufacturers.

• Tool reference numbers have not yet been assigned across all manufacturers

Removal

• Remove valve covers (intake and exhaust separately)
  • Requires removal of the intake module and high-pressure fuel pump
  • Depressurize the fuel system using a diagnostic tester
  • Run the engine at idle until it stalls
• Remove crankshaft vibration damper (tightening spec: 80 Nm + 180°)
  • Install a holding tool at the front
• Remove front timing cover
  • Note: During reassembly, install the valve covers first
• Ensure timing tools remain installed throughout the entire repair process
• Lock and remove the timing chain tensioner
• Remove chain guides (guide rails)
• Remove camshaft adjusters (VVT units) and control valves
  • Tightening spec: 30 Nm + 34°
• Remove components in the following order:
  1. Timing chain together with the exhaust camshaft adjuster
  2. Then the intake camshaft adjuster
• Remove the timing chain
  • Inspect all components for wear

Installation

Reinstallation is carried out in reverse order.

• During installation, ensure correct alignment of:
  • Timing sprocket marks
  • Timing chain markings

Only correct alignment guarantees:

• Proper chain tension
• Accurate valve timing
