Transmission Service Procedures

Mercedes 7G-Tronic 722.9 and 724.2 transmissions use a drain plug with M12x1.5 thread.

During oil draining:

  • The overflow tube inside the oil pan must be driven upward using the removal punch
  • The overflow tube is replaced before reassembly

Mercedes 8G-Tronic 724.1 and 9G-Tronic 725.0 / 725.1 transmissions use a bayonet-style locking plug in the plastic transmission oil pan.

The integrated stepped overflow tube regulates:

  • Oil filling
  • Oil draining quantity
  • Oil level adjustment

Filling Screw Adjustment Positions

Adjustment positions from right to left:

  • Position 1 → Oil filling
  • Position 2 → Small oil drain quantity for oil level inspection
  • Position 3 → Medium oil drain quantity for oil level correction
  • Position 4 → Complete oil draining

Thermostat Service

For correct oil filling procedures on:

  • 724.2
  • 725.0
  • Selected 725.1 transmissions

The original thermostat insert must be replaced with the included spring-loaded thermostat adapter during servicing.

  • After refilling, cycle through all gears and repeat the check.
  • To avoid incorrect measurements, we recommend using a suitable diagnostic device that supports transmission bleeding.
  • On vehicles equipped with an additional oil cooler, the thermostat opens at 90°C. Only after this point is the entire system fully filled.
  • For correct oil filling on 724.1, 724.2, 725.0, and some 725.1 transmissions, the originally installed thermostat insert must be replaced with the spring-loaded adapter.

Procedure for 7-Speed, 722.9 and 724.2 Transmissions

Different transmission oil pans and overflow pipes may be installed. Newer versions allow for a higher fill capacity.

When checking and correcting the transmission oil level, different temperature ranges must be observed (35°C–90°C). Refer to the repair manual.

  • Remove the sealing screw (M12x1.5 thread).
  • For complete oil drainage, drive the standpipe in the oil pan upward using the removal punch.
  • Remove the oil pan, check the installed version, and replace the filter.
  • Replace the standpipe and reinstall the oil pan.
  • Fill approximately 6 liters of transmission oil using the filling adapter.
  • Start the engine and determine the transmission oil temperature:
    • With additional oil cooler: 90°C
    • Without oil cooler, beveled oil pan, white or green standpipe: 45°C
    • Without oil cooler, non-beveled oil pan, black standpipe: 35°C
  • After reaching the specified oil temperature, stop the engine and allow the oil to cool.
  • Restart the engine and add 2 liters of transmission oil (approx. 4 liters for initial filling or emptied torque converter).
  • Remove the filling adapter.
  • Allow the oil to drain until it only drips slowly.
  • Install the sealing screw.

Procedure for 8-Speed, 724.1 Transmission

When checking and correcting the transmission oil level, a temperature range of min. 40°C to max. 85°C must be observed.

The transmission has two bayonet-type oil drain/fill plugs:

  • The front drain plug is located between the primary and secondary filters.
  • The rear drain plug is integrated with the overflow pipe.

According to the repair manual, an ultrasonic measuring device is required for precise oil level determination. We strongly recommend carefully collecting and measuring the drained oil quantity, including oil from the filter elements, and increasing the refill quantity by approximately 0.5 liters (total fill quantity approx. 5.5 liters). Compare the drained amount with the refill amount after the oil change. Refer to the repair manual.

The overflow pipe has three positions:

  • Position 1: Overflow pipe closed
  • Position 2: Oil level check
  • Position 3: Oil drain

Procedure

  • Replace the transmission oil filter on the transmission, then raise the vehicle.
  • Remove the front drain plug (bayonet fitting).
  • Insert the front overflow pipe into Position 1, switch to Position 3, and drain the oil.
  • Return the overflow pipe to Position 1.
  • Replace both lower filters.
  • Remove the rear sealing plug with the overflow pipe and completely drain the oil.
  • Install a new rear sealing plug.
  • Fill the transmission from the top, beside the main oil filter (approx. 5.5 liters).
  • Remove the upper filling cap and add approx. 5.5 liters of transmission oil.
  • Start the engine and leave the transmission in position N after cycling through the gears.
  • Start the “Oil Level Check” using a diagnostic device and monitor the oil temperature.
  • Set the front overflow pipe to Position 2 and allow excess oil to drain into a suitable container.
  • Return the overflow pipe to Position 1.
  • Replace the sealing screw.

Procedure for 9-Speed, 725.0 and 725.1 Transmissions

When checking and correcting the transmission oil level, different temperatures between 35°C and 55°C must be observed. Refer to the repair manual.

  • Remove the sealing plug (bayonet fitting).
  • Set the overflow pipe to Position 4 and drain the oil.
  • Remove the oil pan and replace the filter.
  • Return the overflow pipe to Position 1. Before starting the engine, fill approx. 4–5 liters of automatic transmission oil using the filling adapter.
  • Start the engine and cycle through the gears. The remaining oil level check is performed with the selector lever in position S.
  • Continue filling oil until it flows back out of the overflow opening.
  • Set the overflow pipe to Position 3.
  • Allow the oil to drain until it only drips slowly.
  • Return the overflow pipe to Position 1 and install the sealing plug.
