Specialized adjustment tool used for setting Top Dead Center (TDC), gear backlash, and intermediate drive alignment on VAG 3.0 TDI V6 engines (EA897 Generation 1 & 2).

Suitable for:

Function

This tool is used for precise measurement and adjustment of the intermediate gear, which drives the camshafts via a gear train system. The intermediate gear itself is driven by the timing chain located at the rear of the engine.

It ensures:

  • Accurate camshaft timing
  • Correct gear backlash adjustment
  • Proper alignment of intermediate drive components

The included adapter allows mounting of the tool directly onto the cylinder head for accurate positioning.


Important Notes

  • The intermediate gear flange has an arrow marking
  • The eccentric disc features a semicircular cut-out and (depending on model year) a reference line
  • If no marking is present, create one 5.2 mm to the right of the semicircular cut-out (center measured)

Working Procedure (Summary)

  1. Remove camshaft timing chain from camshafts and install camshafts.
  2. Lock intake camshafts at TDC using locking pin (like (T10060A)).
  3. Fix gear backlash using adjustment pin (like (T40313)), ensuring gear teeth align.
  4. Align eccentric disc cut-out with flange arrow marking (approx. 8 o’clock position relative to cylinder head rib).
  5. Rotate eccentric disc counterclockwise to stop (must rotate freely but not tilt).
  6. Install adjustment tool with adapter (M6) onto cylinder head and secure in position.
  7. Rotate eccentric disc clockwise until alignment mark matches tool tip.
  8. Tighten eccentric disc (do not rotate further).

Procedure is identical for both cylinder banks (left and right).

  • Camshaft sprocket: 23 Nm
  • Guide and tension rail bolts: 5 Nm + 45°
  • Intermediate gear central bolt: 15 Nm + 90°
