This special tool is designed to depress and hold the valve assembly on Mercedes-Benz M115, M116 and M117 engines.
The hydraulic valve clearance adjusters used in these engines are screwed into the cylinder head and feature a 24 mm hex. The lever tool allows the rocker arm to be removed and the hydraulic adjuster replaced without removing the camshaft.
Applicable engine capacities include 2.3 L, 3.5 L, 3.8 L, 4.2 L, 4.5 L, 5.0 L and 5.5 L.
Tool Design
The tool is manufactured according to the design of the original Mercedes-Benz special tool, which is no longer produced or available.
It supports controlled depression of the valve assembly and removal of the rocker arm during hydraulic valve clearance adjuster replacement.
Diagnostic Note
A worn hydraulic adjuster can be checked in an unloaded condition by carefully pressing it with a wooden handle or hammer handle.
The ball-ended pressure pin should remain almost rigid and must not sink under pressure. If the rocker arm has play, the basic position of the hydraulic adjuster may require correction.
This adjustment requires a separate special tool as W117589062300 or as 117 589 06 23 00, which is not included.
Repair Procedure for M117.965
Reference application: Mercedes G-Class W463 G500 AMG
- Rotate the camshaft until the relevant cam lobe points upward
- Use the valve depressor to press down the valve assembly
- Remove the rocker arm
- Replace the hydraulic valve clearance adjuster with its thread lubricated
From 1982, the specified preload dimension was changed from 0.7–1.9 mm to 1.2–2.4 mm. Depending on the engine version, the pressure piece may therefore need to be replaced.
Tightening Torques
- Valve cover: 3 Nm
- Hydraulic valve clearance adjuster: 60 Nm with lubricated thread
Always verify the tightening specifications for the exact engine version before assembly.

M115, M116, M117
For M115 engines, the tool is only suitable for the M115.97-series 2.3 L engines with hydraulic valve clearance adjustment.
