Comprehensive special tool set for all versions and generations 1, 2 and 3 of the oil-immersed timing belt engines used by PSA, Opel, Fiat, Jeep and Toyota.
The set enables professional locking of the camshaft and crankshaft, installation of the elastic auxiliary belt over the coolant pump, checking the timing belt wear limit and installation of the crankshaft radial oil seal.
For balance shaft repairs, additional special tools may be required depending on the engine and repair procedure.
Important Service Information
On these wet timing belt engines, the oil sump should be removed during relevant repair work so that the oil pump strainer can be inspected for timing belt debris.
Always use engine oil with the exact manufacturer approval specified for the respective engine.
The complete set combines the special tools required for the different engine generations and repair procedures.
Generation 1 Engines
On Generation 1 engines, the valve cover extends across the complete cylinder head.
For timing belt replacement and other timing-related repair work, the complete valve cover must be removed.
Generation 2 Engines
Generation 2 engines use a split valve cover.
The L-shaped section containing the oil filler neck can be removed separately. For timing belt replacement, only this L-shaped section and the vacuum pump need to be removed.
The machined slot for the vacuum pump drive at the rear end of the camshaft has a width of 8 mm.
For removal and installation of the camshaft adjusters or camshafts, the complete valve cover must be removed and the holding bridge fitted across both camshafts.
Generation 3 Engines
Generation 3 engines also use a split valve cover.
For timing belt replacement, the L-shaped section with the oil filler neck and the vacuum pump are removed separately.
The vacuum pump drive slot at the rear of the camshaft has a width of 9 mm. The locking tool must therefore be converted using the corresponding extension.
For removal and installation of the camshaft adjusters, the round plastic oil-pressure control valve in the upper valve cover must be removed. The angled holding tool is then inserted through this opening and positioned against the flat surface of the camshaft.
For complete removal and installation of the camshafts, the holding bridge across both camshafts is still required for the basic timing position.
Important Camshaft Adjuster Check
The intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters are visually almost identical apart from the IN and EX markings. Care must be taken to prevent installation in the wrong position.
The adjusters must also be checked for correct mechanical locking to the camshaft.
With the timing belt installed, carefully attempt to turn the camshaft against the adjuster using a wrench on the hexagon. If no rigid connection is present, rotate the camshaft by a maximum of 30°.
If the locking mechanism does not engage, the camshaft adjuster must be replaced.

Camshaft slot width: 8 mm
-
For camshaft adjuster or camshaft removal, full valve cover removal is required
-
Use of camshaft bridge tool across both camshafts is necessary
3rd Generation

Only the L-shaped section and vacuum pump need removal for timing belt replacement
-
Camshaft slot width: 9 mm → requires tool extension/adaptation
-
Camshaft adjuster removal via oil pressure control valve access
-
Angled holding tool must be used on the camshaft flat surface
-
Full camshaft removal requires additional bridge tool for base alignment
Technical Warning – Camshaft Adjusters
-
Intake and exhaust adjusters are visually identical (marked only “IN” / “EX”)
-
High risk of incorrect installation
Mandatory check:
-
Verify mechanical locking of adjusters
-
Attempt rotation via hex key
-
Maximum allowed movement: 30°
-
If locking does not engage → adjuster must be replaced
