Timing Chain Measurement Tensioner / Wear Indicator – Mercedes M271 – as W271589076300

This tool is used for measuring timing chain elongation and wear condition on Mercedes M271 engines.

It allows early diagnosis of chain stretch without disassembling the engine, helping to identify wear in the chain drive system including chain, guides, and sprockets.

Application Procedure

Remove the original chain tensioner. If required, remove generator and sealing cover.

Install the measuring tensioner with 20 Nm torque without gasket.

Rotate the engine manually for 2 full revolutions.
Record the highest reading value, typically at ignition TDC of cylinder 1.

For improved readability, place a rubber O-ring on the scale.
The O-ring will move along the scale with piston travel and mark the maximum value.

Measurement Evaluation

A reading of 63 indicates a properly functioning timing chain system (chain, guides, sprockets).

A value above 75 indicates excessive chain elongation and requires timing chain replacement.

Important Safety Notes

The removed original tensioner must not be reinstalled, as its plunger locks in the extended position and would over-tension the chain.

The engine must only be started with the original Mercedes tensioner installed.

This measuring tool is only intended for manual engine rotation in the correct direction.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in chain skipping, incorrect timing, and severe engine damage.

Torque Specifications

Original chain tensioner: 40 Nm (replace sealing ring)
Measuring tensioner: 20 Nm (install without sealing ring)
