This special tool is designed to compress the spring retainers on UniAir and MultiAir engines from Alfa Romeo, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Lancia.
The electrohydraulic MultiAir actuator controls variable valve lift and is installed in numerous Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles.
Before removing or replacing the MultiAir unit during camshaft or cylinder-head work, its compression springs must be compressed. The unit can only be removed and installed correctly without damage while the springs are held in the compressed position.

Preliminary Work
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the hose between the intercooler and throttle body.
- Remove the crankcase ventilation hose, oil separator and ignition coils.
- Remove the valve cover. It is secured with 13 M6 bolts, including one bolt located inside the timing-belt cover.
- Valve-cover bolt tightening torque: 8 ± 1 Nm.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the UniAir module and oil temperature sensor.
Tool Installation and Module Removal
- Position the tool claws behind the rocker arms.
- Slowly tighten the tool’s clamping screws until they make firm contact.
- Remove the nine bolts securing the module.
- Module bolt specification: M8 with T45 drive.
- Module bolt tightening torque during installation: 20–25 Nm.
Important
- Do not turn the module with the hydraulic tappets facing upward.
- Check that all eight hydraulic tappets are present and complete. Each tappet consists of two parts.
- Always replace the filter element located at the end of the module. A 10 mm hex key is required for removal.
- Replace all seals, including the metal gasket of the MultiAir module.
Installation and Initial Oil Filling
Installation is performed in reverse order.
- A new MultiAir unit must be prefilled before operation.
- After installing the valve cover, the ball valve is visible through the open oil-filler opening.
- Press the ball valve downward with a screwdriver while simultaneously adding an initial oil quantity of 240 ml.
